Group 8: Cooperative Principles and Implicature

In the Gricean model, the bridge from what is said to what is communicated is built through implicature.
In communication, people should follow cooperative principles, in order the communication can be understood by both the speaker and listener. So, Does implicature only arise when the communicator or speaker follows the cooperative principles ?

  1. In my opinion is no, because the implicature means conveyed beyond the word, and it can arise anywhere and anytime. Not only when someone follows the rules of the cooperative principle. For example when comedy shows are on television, when they talk to each other it is definitely not appropriate, when asked about this, they are instead answered about it. However, they understood the purpose of what was said. If seen from the example, it is contrary to the cooperative principle. Both of the quality, relevance, and relation.

  2. I think no because conversation is not that simply, it can be occur a misunderstanding between the conversation so we cannot strictly follow the rules of cooperative principles and maxim. Beside, we can still make the conversation (implicature) accordant the purpose/direction. For example: me and my friend were sitting in front of the class and suddenly i recognize there is a handsome boy so i will say to my friend “hey look at there” and my friend will look at there automatically and make many meaning in her head such as ‘oh there is handsome boy, who is he, is he new student, how tall he is,etc.’ From that example we can conclude that one utterance would mean a lot and i do not need to follow the rules of cooperative principle and maxim to make that utterance, but my friend can imply exactly what i mean.

in my opinion the implicature can occur even though it does not follow the principles of cooperation put forward by Grice. I take the example of a violation of quantitative principles that requires someone to provide information clearly. Suppose a student in school asks his teacher. where can ostrich habitats be found? and then the teacher answers in africa. the teacher has violated the quantitative principle. this happens because the teacher does not know clearly where the ostrich lives.but the students can imply what the teacher mean.
