  1. I think that the characteristics of lexical relations can be introduced by seeing the kinds of lexical relations such as synonim, antonym, homonym, polysemi, hyponymy, meronymy, metonymy, prototype, and also collocation that can be saw by its use in text or context as characteristics of lexical relations, and we know the lexical relation is stated as relationships of the words' meaning to another words. I think my opinion here is enough to answer the thread above. So, would you like to make my opinion clearly? Or correct my perspective? Thanks a lot from 2223180001 Agung Laksono

    1. I agree with your opinion maybe there are several ways to characterize lexical relationships, and one of them is by seeing the kinds. and in my opinion Lexical relations are important for understanding language and cognition, they teach us how words relate to one another and how human thought and perception get organized. and I will make your opinion clearly by giving an example.
      for example is we all know that the opposite of “closed” is “open” and that “literature” is similar to “book”. These words have a significant relationship to one another, whereas words like “chair” and “coffee” might have no meaningful relationship.

    2. I agree with your opinion that lexical relations are the relationship of the meaning of words with other words that can be analyzed through individual words. Here I will add a little explanation that I know about lexical relations, that between synonym or antonyms sometimes has the meaning of ambiguity because of polysemy and homonymy. So there is a need for proper interpretation to avoid this ambiguity.

  2. In my understanding, the characteristics of lexical relations are, first, that lexical relations are used not only for semantic relations, but are also used paradigmatically between words. Second, including the phonetic relationship. Third, it is ambiguous because it can refer to the relationship between words or the relationship between lexical items in the mental lexical.

  3. So, based on my understanding, lexical relations are discuss about analyze meaning of the words or the words between another words. Based on types of lexical relation that are antonymy, synonymy or homonymy,etc, we need the word more than one to analyze the relationship meanings. Like synonyms we need a other words to find the another words that have similar meanings like "sad" and "blue" or on another types is antonymy with example is "heavy" and "light" that have meaning about weight. Maybe that is all form me. Correct me if I wrong but please don't deride my understandings :"" .

    1. And I want to share my opinion about why between homonym, homophone, and homograph. It is only homonym that include in types of lexical relation, why not all of them (homonym, homophone, homograph)? and my answer is because characteristic of lexical relation is discuss about analyze meaning of the words. Homonym are words that have same pronounce, same spelling but different meaning, that is suit with lexical relation because in homonym we are discuss about why the words that have similar pronounce and similar spelling but have different meanings so that is why another two (homophone and homograph) is only include in part of homonym, not types of lexical relation.

    2. Calm ahmad i won’t deride you, i agree with your explanation above. The word need another word/words to be called as lexical relations, like you were said above about the example of synonym and antonym. And please let me emend you that the word “sad” has the similar meaning but it is not “blue”, it is deplorable, unfortunate,tragic,etc. If it is sad means blue it is not synonym but it is semiotic system (i think it is called like that but sorry if i am wrong). And also the antonym example heavy vs light. So, the word “sad” and “heavy” need another word to be called as lexical relations. I think that is from me :).

  4. Based on my understanding, lexical relation is meaning relation between 2 word or more, such as antonyms,synonyms, homonyms,etc. For antonyms we only need 2 word, like "big" versus "small", antonym is the opposite of the meaning of the first word, so it's only need 2 word, but in homophones it has 2 or more word same pronounciation but different meaning, such as "way"-"weigh"-"whey".

    1. I agree with your first statement that say lexical relation compare two or more words related to their meaning and phological relation. But, i i think the example for the second line is not correlated. Remembering that antonym is focus on meaning and homophone is focus on "same spoken words". One more, i think antonym also can have more than two opposite meaning, Thank you.

    2. I agree with you Syafiq. Antonym also can more than two opposite meanings. There are three types of antonym,one of them is Graded Antonyms. Graded antonyms use words having variations between two opposites. For instance, the words “big” and “little” are opposite; however, they can use a variety of other words with opposite meanings such as:Big, bulky, full-size, huge / petite, slight, and little

  5. In my opinion lexical relations are individual items that are connected with other systematic items, carried out through aspects of lexical relations such as synonyms, antonyms, hyponyms, and hypnosis.
    Synonyms are the contribution of words that have the same meaning as another, but there are some synonyms that cannot be used with each other in sentences.
    Antonym is a word whose meaning is opposite. for example before- after, and so on.

  6. Based on my understanding, the characteristics of lexical relation can be seen through the definition and kinds of lexical relation itself. First, the lexical relation is used to indicate any semantics and paradigmatic relation among words. Second, lexical relation including phonetic, morphological, and morpho-syntatic relation. Third, lexical relation could refer to relations among words or lexical items within the mental lexical so it's create ambiguity. And last, kinds of lecixal relation is distinguished from its use in any text or context.

  7. The characteristics of lexical relations, i think that lexical relations is about relations or connections of the meaning between one word to another and we can see the characteristics of lexical relations from the types of lexical relations, that are Synonymy, Antonymy, Homonymy, Polysemy, Hyponymy, Meronymy, Metonymy. For example, words 'Before-After' the lexical relations between 'Before-After' that these words have meanings which are opposite to one another so the relations between that words is antonymy.

  12. Based on my understanding, Lexical Relation is the relationship of meaning, such as synonymy, between words. It characterizes the meaning of each word, not in term of its component features, but in terms of its relationship to other words. •Synonymy, It is the lexical relation in which two or more words have very closely related meaning. For example, "conceal" is a synonym of "hide."
    • Antonym, which two or more words have opposite meaning. For ex, "rich" is a antonym of "poor." And there is also •Hyponym It is the lexical relation in which the meaning of one word is included in the meaning of another.

    •Homophones, They are two or more words with different forms and the same pronunciation.
    to, too, two.
    • Homonyms, They are two words with the same forms that are unrelated in the meaning.

  13. I consider that Lexicon can be said as a network rather than a listing of words as in a publisheddictionary. Lexical field is an important organizational principle in the lexicon. It is also agroup of lexemes which belong to a particular activity or area of specialist knowledge. As wecan see that the vocabulary used by doctors must be different with the vocabulary chosen bythe students. Dictionary recognizes the effect of lexical fields by including in the lexicalentries labels, such as medicine, banking, etc

  16. In my understanding about lexical relations. Lexical relations is it refers to the sense or meaning which leads us that the meaning of a word must be seen by its context or need to be related with other words so it can be understood. So, lexical relations is the branch of semantic, meaning related structure of word. The kinds of lexical relations are Synonymy, Antonymy, Homonymy, Polysemy, Hyponymy, Meronymy, Metonymy.
    For example:
    • Synonym
    A word that has the same or neaarly the same meaning in another word.
    For example :
    Small = little
    Big = large

  17. From my understandings, the lexical relation is utilized to demonstrate any paradigmatic relation among words. Or I could say lexical relation are words that connect with other words, it makes word patterns such as antonym, metonym, synonym, etc..
    It's different from semantic relation. It incorporates phonetic relations, for example, rhyme and similar sounding word usage, morphological relations.
