"If the pandemic ends soon, we can continue doing our nornal activities again."
Based on your understanding and material, is that an example of Entailment or Presupposition? what types of [your answer] is that? And please give your reason as to why is that your answer. Thank you.
I think this is existential presupposition, because hmmm we can make an assumption based on the text "if the pandemic ends soon" we can presuppose that there is a pandemic or the pandemic is exist and "we can continue doing our normal activities again" presuppose that the activities not normal while pandemic exist. ihiy
I think is Counterfactual Presupposition, because based on your paper Conterfactual Presupposition is the assumption that what is presupposed is not only untrue, but is the opposite of what is true, or contrary to facts. Then, some conditional structures called conterfactual conditional. Here, "If the pandemic ends soon, we can continue doing our normal activities again" is conditional stucture and the fact is the pandemic will not end soon, no one knows when it will end soon, so we cannot continue doing our normal activities again. Btw what is nornal? Thank you.
The sentence above is an example of presupposition. In my opinion the above sentence is counterfactual presupposition. Because based on the understanding that I read in the paper, that counterfactual presupposition is an assumption that what is assumed is incorrect or contrary to facts. Looking at the example sentence above, "If the pandemic ends soon, we can continue doing our normal activities again". In the example there is the word 'If' which means a presupposition in which the facts are not true or contrary to the facts. Where we do not know whether the pandemic will end soon or not.
Yes I agree with your opinion bella, even the pandemic will end soon. And I think, we also didn't know can we do normal activities again after pandemic ends.
I think is Counterfactual Presupposition. Because when viewed from the definition of Counterfactual Presupposition is the assumption that what is presupposed is not only untrue, but is the opposite of what is true, or contrary to facts. In addition, the characteristic that states that a sentence belongs to this type is the word "if". "If the pandemic ends soon, we can continue doing our normal activities again." But, in reality the pandemic is not over yet and we don't know when it will end so that we can do normal activities again. thank you hopefully useful:)
In my opinion the above sentence is counterfactual presupposition. Because, that counterfactual presupposition is an assumption a conditional statement in which the first clause is a past tense subjunctive statement expressing something contrary to fact. Looking at the sentence "If the pandemic ends soon, we can continue doing our normal activities again". In the example sentence use the word "If" and it shows that it can happen or it can't happen. Thank u 😊
According to the article I read and in my opinion, Entailment in the relationship between speech and its intentions is absolute. That is, everything that is spoken through sentences or writings must always be followed by logic. Then the absolute concept of entailment exists because of a sentence that follows each other; then the truth of the sentence must remain stable.
I think the sentence above is Counterfactual Presupposition. Because based on the definition of Counterfactual Presupposition it is the assumption that what is presupposed is not only untrue, but is the opposite of what is true, or contrary the facts. And the sentence is in accordance with the definition because is just assumption and it is contrary to the fact because the pandemic is not over yet and we don't know when it will end. And there is Counterfactual conditional that is used if clauses (wish) and embedded clause after wish. In my opinion, looking at the sentence above "If the pandemic ends soon, we can continue doing our normal activities again." fulfills the conditional that already mentioned.
Hello my name is Yanda Nurul Islami and I would like to answer the question above. I think that sentence is Entailment, why? because as i know entailment is naturally logic and less discussed. That sentence is logic because like an example the pandemic of Covid-19. Before there is a pandemic, we can do our activities normally meanwhile after there is a pandemic we cannot do our activities normally. Our activities are limited, also if we want to buy our daily needs or something we should protect our body one of that is by using mask and do physical distancing. So, it is logic if that sentence said that after the pandemic over, we can do our activities normally. I think that is from me, thank you :)
I think that sentence above is example of counterfactual preposition. Because because based on what I understand from group 5 paper. The counterfactual preposition is an assumption that what is assumed is incorrect or contrary to facts. So, why the sentence“ if the pandemic ends soon, we can continue doing our normal activities again” ?, because we don’t know the sentence will happen or not.
IMHO, 🤔 the sentence 'If the pandemic ends soon, we can continue doing our nornal activities again.' Is Counterfactual Presupposition because that sentence is commenced by 'if' word. And 'if the pandemic ends soon,...', it means the pandemic does not end soon, or on the other hand the pandemic still exists until now.Thanks.
according to my understanding, the sentence is included in the Counterfactual Presupposition example, because in this group material the counterfactual presupposition is the assumption that what is presupposed is not only untrue, but is the opposite of what is true, or is it not to facts. and the sentence is a conjecture, or a supposition but the fact is not necessarily true that "If the pandemic ends soon, we can continue doing our normal activities again." because we don't know a pandemic when it will end or it might not end.
Well, I think the sentence above is Counterfactual Presupposition. Because counterfactual presupposition has a meaning that what is presupposed not only not true, but it is the opposite of what is true, or contrary to facts. For instance, some conditional structures, generally called counterfactual conditionals, presuppose that the information, in the If-clause, is not true at the time of utterance. This sentence uses "if" And 'if the pandemic ends soon" which means the pandemic does not end soon, or the pandemic still exists until now.
In my opinion. The sentence-"If the pandemic ends soon, we can continue doing our nornal activities again." is a counterfactual presupposition. The utterance can be define as a tragedy that still or it will end soon or even it can be a never ending tragedy. But in the other side, the author hope is the contrary situation of the previous fact.
In my oppinion it is Counterfactual Presupposition, because based on your paper the definition of Conterfactual Presupposition is the assumption that what is presupposed is not only untrue, but is the opposite of what is true, or contrary to facts.
Based on my understanding, I think it is Presupposition. Counterfactual Presupposition, because presupposed is not only untrue, but is the opposite or contrary to facts and the information, in the if- clauses. "If the pandemic ends soon, we can continue doing our nornal activities again." - the pandemic is not end yet and we do not know when will the pandemic end.
I think this is existential presupposition, because hmmm we can make an assumption based on the text "if the pandemic ends soon" we can presuppose that there is a pandemic or the pandemic is exist and "we can continue doing our normal activities again" presuppose that the activities not normal while pandemic exist. ihiy
