Does a sign have a different meaning for each person?

  1. Mmm... 🤔 I think yes,it does. For example, in my village, the drivers of Angkot use O simbol of finger to sign that there is no passenger they get. In usually, we use O symbol of finger to say 'Okay' or something agreement.
Another example, 'V' symbol of fingers signs that 'I swear' but some people use V symbol to get nice picture when they selfie, or v can be signed as number 2. Thanks.

    1. Yes i agree with you, because everyone has their own understanding and certainly different. By the way in my village the angkot drivers use their hand like say goodbye for sign that the angkot was full. Different with your country right?
And i have ever read on the article that are sign that formal in our country but informal in another country. So, should we learn various of sign from entire world? 👀👀

    2. It's nice.
mmm...actually it depends to ourself. if we will go to abroad I say 'yes' to learn sign of that country, but if we will not go to abroad, I say 'no'. but it is better if we learn it to additional knowledge. But bye the way, formal sign in our country but informal sign in another country, can you give me example sign of it?
I'll wait for the best answer of you, Ahmad. For friends too.

    3. For example, if in our country if we want to say "okay" or "good" we can use the gesture like show our thumbs or thumbs up, I think it can be informal, but based on the article that I have ever read, that gesture/sign in Iran or Iraq is more impolite, the meaning is mocking.

  2. I think a sign has a different meaning. One sign can have several meanings, and the sign can be interpreted depending on the situation and conditions.
But there are also some signs that have the same meaning for everyone. For example : put the index finger in front of the lips means silence.

That's just my opinion, sorry if i'm wrong 🙏

  3. in my opinion, the sign has a different meaning, depending on the context that is happening, for example when someone wants to ask for a ride, I've seen someone give a thumb up to give a sign to the driver, someone also gives a thumb up if the condition is good.

  4. Well in my opinion, sign doesn't has different meaning for every person. Because usually the meaning of sign is already approved by the community, for example everyone agree that the red light in traffic light means we need to stop, because it already approved. But there are also some sign that different meaning for some communities, so the meaning of the sign is not depends on each person interpretation, but its depends on communities agreement.

    1. I agree with salsa's opinion, in my opinion not all signs have different meanings for every person. In some regions or countries there may be signs that have the same meaning, so that means the sign has been agreed / approved. And if there are signs that have different meanings it may depend on the context, situation, or culture of a community.

    2. I think it can be each person and particular communities because when one particular communities meet one person from another communities and they send a sign to him, he will not understand or can be misunderstanding of it. So, we cannot say that sign has different meaning for each person or communities but both of them. Like when i go to another country, it must be different for the culture, rules, and others. So then i think the interpretation of the sign would be different on each person and communities.

      Okay then, thank youu.

    3. I do agree with you salsa, every communities or countiers have their agreement about meaning of the sign, so people know what the sign mean, but we also have to consider people's knowledge about the meaning of the sign itself, so maybe each person has their own interpetation. Thank you.

    4. I agree with Salsa opinion. Because in my opinion how is the sign can be used for communication if everyone has a different understanding. And in my opinion also the sign can be different meaning based on several reasons such as different regions and cultures but the sign is not have different meaning based on the interpretation of each person. Because as salsa said before the sign is used the meaning has been accepted in the community.

  5. Well, I think yes it does. Because Perceptions of people can differ from an object (sign), depending on its ability to "read" sign or symbol with the existing memory in the brain so provide an "explanation" of what is seen.
    example :
If in Indonesia the sign "ok" means to agree. Meanwhile, in America this sign means money. Another example is waving hand can have 2 meanings, say hello or say goodbye. Thank you

  6. Well in my oppinion sign has different meaning for every single person, because every person has their own perception of that sign. Just imagine we have different gender, different blood, and different region so of course our thought also different.

  7. I agree that there are some universal sign which is the sign is already aprroved by the community.

But I think, a sign have a different meaning for each person. Because, everyone has a different preception about something. For example. Sign caused by animal, when a dog lights up it means that there is a burglar. But, maybe some people will think that the dog was hungry.

  8. In my opinion, a sign can have different meaning for each person. For example when you're in an exam, you can give a sign for your friend when you're friend asking an answer. One finger for A, two finger for B, three finger for C, four finger for D and five finger for E. But if your friend doens't understand it, it can be a different meaning for him. And the teacher who saw your sign can also hava a different understanding.
